Abstract
Background: Operating Room (OR) personnel have showed high incidence of sharps injuries because of frequent exposure to the sharp instruments. Several guidelines including double gloving or prohibiting recapping used needles have been provided. This study was aimed to investigate adherence to these two guidelines and predictors.

Methods: A Cross-sectional survey with self-administered questionnaire was adopted. The participants were 145 health care professionals (95 surgeons, and 50 nurses) working at the operating rooms in a tertiary hospital in Busan. Data were collected with structured self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, and multiple logistic regressions.

Results: 13.8% of respondents have always complied with double gloving and 10.3% of respondents have always complied with no recapping. The adherences both to double gloving and no recapping showed statistically significant difference between physicians and nurses. The adherence to double gloving was higher in nurses (OR=20.79, 95% CI=4.32-99.95) and those who have exposed to education on double gloving (OR=6.40, 95% CI= 2.19-18.40) than counterparts. The adherence to no recapping was higher in those who have perceived necessity of the guideline (OR=7.10, 95% CI=1.75-28.96) and those who have exposed to education on no recapping used needles (OR=4.04, 95% CI=1.56-10.45).

Conclusions: This study showed that education on each guideline was the most important factor to increase the adherence to the guidelines. Strategies for education on sharps injury prevention guidelines should be developed and implemented, especially for physicians.
